Rx at Wegmans = possible freebies!

Do you have any prescriptions filled at Wegmans?  Our family uses Wegmans pharmacy and they generally have store coupons included in the prescription inserts.  To be totally honest, I rarely find a coupon in there that interests me.  However, my usually healthy-as-a-horse daughter went through 2 rounds of antibiotics recently.  I almost automatically tossed the coupons out until I realized I had a couple of gems in there.  Check out what I was able to get for FREE today:

Along with the coupons I had no interest in was a coupon for a free can of Wegmans organic beans (15.5 oz., any variety) and another coupon for a free bag of Wegmans frozen veggies (16 oz. polybag or 12 oz. steamable). 

So, if you haven't been paying attention to your prescription paperwork from Wegmans, you might want to check more carefully!

Tops 12/30 - 1/5 shopping: trip #1 freebies, cheapies & extra gas points

First of all, I apologize for not posting any good shopping deals the past couple of weeks.  With Christmas craziness abound, grocery shopping just wasn't a big priority for me (thanks in part to a nice stockpile from previous couponing!).  I'm back and was ready to hit the store today, though, to use up some coupons expiring tomorrow.  And to add to my coupon-induced happiness, I was excited to see that Tops is extending their gas points earning period until 1/12 with redemption until 1/26.  I already have earned enough to get free gas, so this news was just icing on the cake for me. :-)  Here is a look at the few items I bought today:

No coupon, but it was on sale and I really needed it today :-)

The retail total of this shopping trip was $43.78 and after coupons and discounts I paid $18.85, for a savings of almost 57%.

December Nature's Marketplace Magazine

I had to run into Wegmans today, so I stopped and grabbed a free copy of the December issue of Nature's Marketplace magazine.

To be quite honest, I found this issue's coupons disappointing:

• $1.00 off any box of Erewhon graham crackers (exp. 6/30/13)

That's it. Just 2 coupons. :-(

Money Saving Challenge - wk 30 in review

These are the things I did this week to help save my family money:

• I matched sales and coupons at Tops and Wegmans to help lower my grocery bill.  
• We utilized the local public library for free books and kids' activities.
• I combined errands on outings to help save on gas.
• I avoided using the oven on the hottest days in order to keep the house cooler and help save on air conditioning costs.
• I opened the windows to catch the cooler morning and evening breezes to also save on cooling costs, and avoided using the AC completely on cooler days.
• I used the free raspberries from our plants at home for snacks and smoothies.
• I cut the dishwasher tablets in half for each load.
• My kids played several games in a free softball league.
• I used buckets to catch the air conditioner condensation and rain to help water my plants.
• One of my daughters had a birthday party to go to, so I was able to use a coupon at Joann's to purchase the gift she wanted to give at a reduced cost and was able to give it in a used (but in like-new condition) gift bag we already had.  When I realized we didn't have a birthday card on hand, my daughter chose to make one herself.
• We brought drinks and snacks from home (purchased on sale and with coupons, of course!) on our outings this week so there was no temptation to stop and buy pricier food while we were out.
• We utilized our local zoo membership for a fun, free outing. (While I did have to pay for the membership earlier in the year, we go often enough that it pays for itself after the 2nd or 3rd visit. Plus, it's nice to know that after the initial membership payment we can head to the zoo as many times as we want without any out-of-pocket costs.)
• I broke down one night and ordered a pizza, but I used a BOGO coupon.  This gave us enough for leftovers the next day.
• I found a bunch of "no beer purchase required" rebates that I'll be able to use to stock up on items for close to free.

Do you ever find yourself strapped for cash and feel like you can't take advantage of any good deals at the grocery store because of it?  I made a trip to Wegmans today to grab a few items on what I refer to as a "spare change shopping trip."  Whether by necessity or not, sometimes I can get away with going to Wegmans with less than $5.  Think about it...If you combed the inside of your car and looked in your couch cushions, you could probably find close to 5 bucks in change, right?  Here are a few deals I bought for $4.84 (with $0.49 of it being tax):

Note: Milky Ways are on sale for less at Tops this week ($0.69, I think) but I've been hearing that their registers are programmed to attach only to the first candy bar instead of both, which is preventing the coupon from doubling and making them both free.  To avoid this potential issue, I decided to take my coupons to Wegmans and pay pennies for them instead.

The retail total of this transaction was $23.45 and I paid $4.84 after Shoppers Club and coupons, for a savings of 79%.

Now, obviously this low budget shopping trip won't feed your family.  Hopefully you've been able to build a well-rounded stockpile which will allow you to feed your family on the items you've bought cheaply in the past, while you spend a few dollars to help build your stockpile of other items.  For example, I'm going to stock up on the candy bars and put them away for Halloween or Christmas stocking stuffers!

Cereal coupons for possible Tops deal

If you need to stock up on cereal, you might be able to score a deal at Tops this week.  The ad features a sale on General Mills cereal: buy 4 and get $4 off instantly.  Here are a few coupons that might make for some good deals (unfortunately the ad doesn't give any cereal prices):

The retail cost of today's trip was $57.78 and after discounts and coupons I paid $28.29, for a savings of 51%.  Not necessarily my best trip, but I was able to help boost my back-to-school lunchbox snack stockpile. I currently now have a gas discount of $0.50 per gallon.

Couponing tip: How I prepare for a Tops shopping trip

I've been getting a lot of requests lately regarding tips for shopping at Tops and how I go about preparing for a shopping trip.   This post will hopefully help you understand the process I go through to try to be most successful at the store.

Keep in mind, in order to get the best deals you should use your coupons in conjunction with a sale. My weekly shopping list almost always consists of sale items matched with coupons. I'm able to create meals for my family by stockpiling during sales and pulling from my stockpile when it's mealtime, not necessarily using only the items I bought during the current week.

My local Tops ad comes in the mail usually on Thursday or Friday before the sale starts, so it gives me a bit of a head start in getting ready for my upcoming shopping trip(s).  The first thing I do is sit down with a pen and circle all the things in the ad that pique my interest on a first glance through the ad.  They might be things I know I have a coupon for, things I think I might be able to find a coupon for, or items that seem to be a good price as is without a coupon (usually things like produce or meat that I most likely won't have coupons for).  Rarely do I buy all the things I circle in the ad and often I will end up buying items I didn't notice on my first inspection. Some shoppers keep a price book or spreadsheet to track the ultimate rock bottom price that an item ever sells for and then buy it only at that price.  I'm not that hard core.  I decide on a case by case basis if a sale with coupon price is low enough for my liking.  Sometimes I'll opt not to buy something even if it's on sale and I have a coupon because it just doesn't feel like a good enough deal for me.

Once I have identified the items I'm interested in buying, I start pulling my coupons out of my binder.  There are a lot of ways to organize your coupons (I'll blog more about this topic soon), and I use kind of a combination of ways which just seems to work well for me.  I use a binder to hold the coupons I know I'll use, the coupons I think I'll use if the price is right, and coupons that don't come in coupon inserts (from mailers, printed from the Internet, tearpad coupons, etc.).  Coupons from the Sunday coupon inserts that I don't cut out right away are kept in their insert and I file the inserts in an accordion file.  If I find I need some of those coupons in the future, I still have access to them.

If I don't have a coupon in my binder or in the filed inserts for a product I'd like to buy, I start scouring the Internet for printable coupons.  I check places like the product's website or Facebook page as well as online coupon websites such as coupons.com, smartsource.com, redplum.com, and couponnetwork.com. 

I'll go through the ad again, a little more thoroughly the second time around, to see if there are any other deals that interest me that I previously missed.  If there are, I check for coupons again.  If not, I move on. 

Once I have all my coupons together, I'm ready to put my list together.  It's very important to know the store's coupon policy!  Most stores have their policy posted online (for example, Tops' policy can be found here).

Tops is a little different than other stores, because of their gas points program.  Per their policy, you can earn 10 gas points per manufacturer coupon you redeem during a gas points earning period.  However, you are limited to earning 100 gas points from your coupons per day per household (this does not include gas points deals in the ad, such as 'earn an extra 200 gas points when you buy 8 select items' types of deals).  Basically, you can use as many manufacturer coupons as you want in a transaction but you'll only earn points on the first 10.  I very often have more than 10 coupons I'd like to use, so in order to maximize my gas points earnings, I'll go to the store multiple days during the week, using up to 10 coupons each time.  Now, if you live far from the store or are extremely busy this might be a total waste of gas and time, so you might take the hit and just use all of your coupons at one trip.  Luckily, I live quite near a store so it's more than worth it for me.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Tops doubles coupons with a face value of up to $0.99.  However, their policy states that they can limit you to 4 like coupons being doubled per day per household.  So if I have, for example, 6 $0.75 coupons for the cereal I'm going to buy I will make sure to only use 4 on one day and save the other 2 for later in the week.

Here's an example of how my shopping list might look:

On the above list (I'm not sure how easy it is to read), I'm planning 3 trips because I have well over 10 coupons to use and we are in a gas points earning period, plus I make sure I use no more than 4 like doubling coupons in a trip.  Under each trip I list the item I'm buying (including the quantity), the sale price, the coupon denomination (and quantity), as well as any other important reminders (like 'get a $3 Catalina when you buy these 5 items' or 'don't forget the bottle returns!') for that transaction.  I put my list and coupons in an envelope and head to the store.  I make sure I bring along the entire list and coupons I'm going to use on any future orders because sometimes I have to make adjustments on the fly.  For example, if I'm planning on using 10 coupons on trip 1 but 3 of those coupons are for cereal that is sold out, I'm only now going to have 7 coupons to redeem at the register.  Since I can get credit for 10 coupons, I'll try to find in-stock items from the 2nd or 3rd planned trip in order to use 3 more of my coupons.  Of course, make sure to stop by customer service and ask for a rain check for any sold-out items! 

Now, if we are not in a gas points earning period I will only do multiple trips if I have more than 4 like coupons to be doubled, if I have coupons that have lower limits on them (such as a Suave body wash coupon that states only 2 coupons per trip), or I realize I've missed a worthwhile deal earlier in the week.

My list isn't always hard and fast as I've written it, too. I may have second thoughts about some items I didn't originally consider buying, or I may decide I really don't need something on my list after all. Don't feel like you need to lock in everything on your list from the get go.

I hope my thought process (as muddled as it may come across while you're reading it!) will help you to better prepare for your shopping trip.  Although I focused on a Tops shopping trip, you can use the same process for other stores just taking into consideration your store's coupon policy (for example, Wegmans has the same policy to double coupons up to a $0.99 face value and limits doubling to 4 like coupons).

New "no beer purchase" produce rebate

It can be a challenge to find coupons for fresh produce, so I always get excited when I find a good deal.  That's why I was so excited when I found a new "no beer purchase required" rebate at Tops this week!

Here are the details...

Save $4.00 via mail-in rebate on the purchase of oranges, compliments of Shock Top.  Purchase price of oranges must exceed $4.00.  No beer purchase required.  Valid for residents of AL, AR, CT, HI, KY, MA, ME, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NY, RI, UT, and WV only.  Purchases must occur between 7/1/12 and 8/31/12.  Requests must be postmarked by 9/14/12.  Limit 1 $4.00 rebate per address.

I didn't notice any at the Ridgemont Wegmans, but there were quite a few at the Mt. Read Tops. 

Kraft BBQ coupon = free/cheap?

Head over to the Kraft Barbecue Facebook page.  They currently have a $0.50 coupon available.  Use it at a store that doubles, like Wegmans or Tops, and you'll score cheap BBQ sauce for sure.  I've also seen it go on sale 10/$10 at Tops, so you just might be able to get some for free if you are able to wait for a sale!

Money Saving Challenge - weeks 24 - 26 in review

I can't believe it's been so long since I've chronicled my attempts to save money!  For a while there, I was really good about jotting down my efforts on a daily basis and somehow I just got out of the habit.  I'm sure there are a few things I've forgotten over the past few weeks, but here are the things that come to mind:

• As a special treat, we took the family to see a movie (Madagascar 3 -- it was very cute!).  I used a free movie ticket I earned from a Kellogg's promotion, plus the tickets we bought were cheaper since we went to a matinee.
• I received a rebate check from a previous no beer purchase rebate for fresh fruit.
• I planted tomato plants that were given to me (free) and lettuce seeds (cheap).
• I cut roses and tiger lillies from my yard to enjoy, instead of buying flowers.
• I matched sales and coupons at Tops and Wegmans.
• We've been enjoying free fruit from the strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries picked from our yard and a relative's yard.
• In order to limit my air conditioning costs, I've been keeping the curtains and blinds closed as well as opening the windows to catch the cooler morning and evening breezes.
• I used a free Redbox code to enjoy a movie at home.
• I cashed in Swag Bucks for a $5 Amazon gift card, to be used to offset Christmas gift expenses later this year.
• I combined errands on outings in order to save on gas.
• Now that school is out, we've been utilizing the public library more for books and free kids' activities.
• I received a free cereal coupon in the mail from a giveaway at Thrifty Ways and Ideas (thanks, Maria!).
• I received a free Target cosmetic bag in the mail, packed with nice samples and Target coupons.
• I paid a couple of bills online to save on stamps.
• I received a mailer from Tops containing store coupons.
• I've been running the dishwasher with half of a dishwashing tablet.
• I cashed out my SavingStar balance.

Local Tops coupon mailer info!

If you received the Mt. Read Tops grand re-opening mailer like I did last weekend, I have some exciting news. 

Since I needed milk, I stopped at the Ridgemont Wegmans while I was out running errands (I'll be posting a few freebies and cheapies shortly!) and noticed they had posted a sign that they will accept the Tops coupons from this mailer.  I know at one time in the past they accepted the Dollar Doubler coupons in the Tops ad, but they stopped doing that a while ago.  Maybe this is a sign they will begin accepting those again?  A girl can dream, right? :-)

I can't confirm that they will accept the coupons at the Mt. Read Wegmans, but I would assume they would, since it's so much closer to Tops.  Have any readers noticed signs at the Mt. Read Wegmans?  Leave a comment below if you have!

Tearpad coupons galore!

I get excited whenever I find a tearpad coupon at the grocery store, because it happens so infrequently.  Well, the coupon gods must have been looking down upon me this week because I found a bunch of them while I was shopping!  Take a look:

For those of you who are local, I found the Special K booklet on an endcap display near the dairy department in the Ridgemont Wegmans and the rest of them were in the cookies and crackers aisle in the Mt. Read Tops.  They aren't the best coupons in my opinion, but the thrill of finding so many on one day was quite exciting to me! :-)

Money Saving Challenge: weeks 22 & 23 in review

I was so busy last weekend that I never had a chance to chronicle my money saving activities.  So, this week's post includes the things I did last week and this week to save money:

• I matched sales and coupons at Tops and Wegmans in order to save money on my groceries.
• I received a mailer from Target that included several Target coupons.
• I saved the juice from canned pineapple and used it to make a smoothie.
• We ate leftovers for a couple of dinners and lunches.
• I combined my errands on outings in order to save gas.
• I avoided using the oven on a hot day in order to keep the house more comfortable and avoid running the air conditioner.
• I stayed home 2 days in order to save on gas.
• I paid several bills online in order to save money on stamps.
• I opened the windows in the house in order to take advantage of some comfortable breezes on a couple days, which helped avoid running the air conditioning.
• I cashed in some Kellogg's cereal codes (bought on sale and with coupons, of course!) in order to obtain a free movie ticket voucher. 
• I received a free sample and coupon of Finish Quantum dishwasher detergent in the mail.
• I found a coupon for a product I buy often next to my car in a parking lot.  A love surprise scores like that! :-)
• I made a batches of homemade laundry detergent and homemade hair detangler.
• I recieved a free cosmetic-type bag filled with free samples and coupons from Always and Tampax in the mail.

6/3 - 6/9 Tops deals: shopping trip #1

Today I made my first of several trips to Tops, in order to maximize my gas points and to stay within the store coupon policy.  I don't generally have a hard and fast weekly grocery budget, but my general rule is to stay under $75 for the week.  I often stay under $50 and there have been several weeks where I spent in the $30 range.  Between today's trips to Tops and Wegmans to stock up on some pricier items I needed, I've already spent over $75.  Because I've been under budget for several weeks, I don't really feel bad for spending well over my typical limit this week. :-)

On sale BOGO ($3.29), used a $1.50 off 2 Catalina coupon from a previous transaction and 2 $0.50 coupons (double to $1) from their website (the click & save link in the lower right, I have trouble printing this coupon from 2 of my 3 computers for some reason so hopefully you can get it to print)
Notes: There is also a $1 off 2 coupon in the 5/13 SmartSource insert.  Today's transaction also triggered another $1.50 off 2 Catalina coupon, so I will definitely be stocking up on cheese throughout the week!

I also bought peaches (on sale $0.99/lb.) and pork loin (on sale $1.99/lb.) without coupons.

The retail cost of this transaction was $71.77 and I paid $30.13 after discounts and coupons for a savings of 58%.  I am also at a gas discount of $1.40 per gallon.

Wegmans freebies and cheapies - week of 6/3

I haven't done much shopping at Wegmans lately, but I hit the store and picked up quite a few deals today.  My overall savings wasn't super high (I paid $46.07 for $83.92 worth of groceries, for a savings of 45%), but several of my needed purchases didn't have coupons and/or sales (like milk, produce, and cleaning items).  I also bought a few things that weren't on sale but had coupons expiring soon and wanted to take advantage of at least some savings. 

Here are my favorite cheap and free items from today:

Note: Always be sure to read the wording on your coupons carefully!  I had originally planned on using multiples of this coupon on my trip today, until I noticed that the coupon specifically states only 1 coupon per shopping trip.  I'll use them throughout several shopping trips.

I had also planned on picking up some $0.99 Carefree pantylinerS, because I had $0.50 coupons from here (no longer seem to be available) and from the 5/6 SmartSource coupon insert.  They would be FREE after the coupon doubles, but they were out of stock when I was there today.

Another freebie I saw, but didn't have the coupon printed at the time, was for North Star popsicles.  A few varieties are on sale for $0.99, and by using the coupon from their website (must register), they will be FREE.  I was able to do a major stock up on these last year and I will definitely be picking some of these up again this time around!
